HOMESTEAD, Fl. (October 2, 2017) – Concluding an amazing Ferrari Challenge weekend that included a victory, and five podiums, Scuderia Corsa will now turn their championship form to this weekend’s IMSA finale at the famed Petit Le Mans, where the team is poised to win their third consecutive championship.
Scuderia Corsa brought eight Ferrari Challenge entries to the scenic Homestead-Miami Speedway in South Florida. Highlighting his Coppa Shell category season, Karl Williams would take yet another victory during Race Two furthering his lead in the championship, while in the premier Trofeo Pirelli category, Cooper MacNeil and Martin Fuentes would continue a consistent season with second and third-place finishes respectively during both Saturday’s and Sunday’s races. Lisa Clark would once again earn the Ladies’ Cup, while Michael Fassbender and Chris Carel would all show well, and Thomas Tippl taking his first laps in the Esperienza program. Closing the team’s success, Ferrari Beverly Hills would earn the Coppa Team Cup. The 2017 Ferrari Challenge season will continue on to the Finali Mondiali World Finals, taking place at Ferrari’s own Mugello Circuit from October 26-29.
All attention now turns toward the upcoming IMSA finale at the famed Petit Le Mans, where the team will enter with an opportunity to win an unprecedented four championships in the series, including the Team, Driver, Manufacturer and Endurance Championships.
Following their most recent victory at Laguna Seca Raceway, drivers Christina Nielsen, Alessandro Balzan and the No. 63 Ferrari 488 GT3 have earned enough points that both the Drivers’ and Team Championships are a virtual lock, with the team only needing to start to clinch. Should this happen, the team will have won their third straight IMSA championship, and fourth in only five years.
Additionally, should the team finish in the top-four, they will earn the Manufacturer’s Championship for Ferrari, which would prove particularly monumental on the 70th Anniversary of Ferrari.
Beyond the traditional IMSA championship, this weekend’s ten-hour race will also close out the North American Endurance Cup, where both the team and drivers stand one point ahead of their competition. The team will focus on getting the maximum results not only at the end of the race, but at various point-paying stages throughout.
For Team Owner, Giacomo Mattioli, another championship season is a remarkable achievement.
“We’re extremely happy to provide such a great season for all of our clients and friends in the Ferrari Challenge,” stated Mattioli. “Not one weekend passed without a victory and multiple podiums, and that’s a testament to both our crew and driver development. Heading to Petit Le Mans, we’re in our best position ever to win our fourth IMSA championship, and our primary emphasis will be on securing the crown for Ferrari as well as the North American Endurance Cup. It’s beyond special to think we’re this close to four IMSA titles in one season, and it’s proof of the incredible depth of our organization.”
Official practice for Petit Le Mans begins this Thursday, October 5, with race action taking place on Saturday, October 7. Television coverage begins on FOX Sports 1 from 10:30AM ET through 11:30AM, then 11:30AM – 2:30PM on FOX Sports 2, and finally 5PM – 9:30PM ET. The race will also be streamed live in the U.S. in its entirety on the FOX Sports GO app with FOX authentication, and also will be broadcast live from flag-to-flag on IMSA Radio via IMSA.com, RadioLeMans.com and SiriusXM Radio.
