ALTON, Virginia (August 19, 2018) – In a strong come-from-behind effort for Scuderia Corsa and the entire No. 63 Ferrari 488 GT3 team, Cooper MacNeil and Gunnar Jeannette would enjoy an impressive drive to take fourth during today’s ninth round of IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar competition. Competing at the scenic VIRginia International Raceway, the team’s position would solidify their fourth-place standing in both the team and driver’s championship.
Starting from the fifth row in the GT-Daytona (GTD) category, Cooper MacNeil would take starting honors in one of the hottest and humid days of the season, doing an impressive job of managing his car through the opening stint before handing over to long-time teammate Gunnar Jeannette.
Launching a remarkable campaign through the field, the team would utilize a timely yellow to take an off-setting pit strategy that would see them gain multiple positions through a middle series of pit stops, with Gunnar then finishing the effort with a series of diving passes, ultimately in fourth across the finish line.
For Cooper MacNeil, a great satisfaction was found in the overview of the event.
“Considering the overall performance package on the WeatherTech Ferrari it was a maximum finishing position for us today,” MacNeil said. “Big thanks to the Scuderia Corsa/WeatherTech guys for working their butts off and putting us in a position with strategy to get, probably, more than we deserved today. We made up some points in the championship. We have two races left, with WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca coming up next.”
For Jeannette, great strategy played a large role in the performance.
“It was an amazing call to short fill us on the second stop to move up several positions on the field,” stated Jeannette. “Somehow I got a lot of pick-up on the tires, it improved, then I carried too much speed into the corner and lost a few positions. The guys did a great job in the pits again to get me back up there. We did not have a car to race today but we showed a lot of heart and never gave up.”
For Giacomo Mattioli, a combined team effort was the best anyone could ask for.
“It was a great team effort, and we maximized the best result we could,” stated Mattioli. “Cooper did his part to preserve the car in the heat, and the team made a perfect strategy call to short-fill in the second stop, which put Gunnar in a position to capitalize on the day. Fourth place is all we could have asked for and we are looking forward for our home race at Laguna Seca.”
All focus will now turn to the team’s home race, the famed WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca. Located in hills of Monterey, California, the event will serve as a hosting venue for over 200 guests, spotlighting the team’s partners and the relationship with its four Ferrari dealerships located throughout Southern California and Silicon Valley. Practice will begin on Friday, September 7, with the racing taking place on Sunday, September 9.
