ELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin (August 7, 2018) – In a race that saw two separate come-from-behind drives by the duo of Cooper MacNeil and Alessandro Pier Guidi, Scuderia Corsa and the No. 63 Ferrari 488 GT3 would take a remarkable third during Sunday’s eighth round of the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship, taking place at the historic Road America. It would serve as the second consecutive podium for the team, marking a renewed performance in the second half of the season.
In one of his best qualifying performances to date, Cooper MacNeil would start the race from the second row in P4. Unfortunately during the opening laps, an early re-start would result in contact from a competitor, cutting down his right rear tire and forcing MacNeil to pit for repairs. Proving minimal damage to his Ferrari, Cooper would immediately return to a competitive pace, catching the field and handing the car to Alessandro Pier Guidi in a strong position to podium.
Returning to the team for the first time since 2016, the former Daytona 24 winner was instantly on pace, threatening to win in the final hour of the race until further contact would send his Ferrari off course and in to the gravel. Luckily Pier Guidi was able to keep the No. 63 running and re-emerge on track, setting himself up for daring final 15-minutes in which he’d gain five positions, eventually finishing third by time the checkered flag fell.
For Alessandro Pier Guidi, a compromised result was still satisfying.
“I had good pace. I was overtaking the Mercedes into Turn One, but was simply pushed out into the gravel. We lost three positions. That was tough with ten laps to go and it was difficult to recover. I think in the end P3 is more than the maximum we could have hoped for after all of that late race action.”
For Cooper MacNeil, a difficult opening few laps was well compensated by the team’s overall performance.
“I was coming out of the last corner on the restart and got into some gravel at the exit that was on the track and was sliding around and the Acura hit me. We made some repairs and got back out and I was able to run times equal to the leaders. We were lucky it happened early in the race and were able to comeback. Alessandro was awesome. Thanks to Scuderia Corsa for building a strong car. We got pushed around out there all day and the WeatherTech Ferrari held up well. Alessandro kicked butt, it was awesome, second podium in the last two races!”
For Team Owner Giacomo Mattioli, the team’s rebounded form is one he takes pride in.
“Sunday’s performance is the kind of team effort we’ve come to expect,” stated Mattioli. “Despite multiple setbacks, no one gave up, and between great pit work, strategy, driving, and of course a fast Ferrari, nothing was able to dissuade us from a podium. It was a hard-fought battle, but we are happy for a podium for the home race for WeatherTech.”
The team will now only enjoy a few days away from the track, with the next round of IMSA competition taking place in two weeks’ time in the series final GT-only race at VIRginia International Raceway. Official practice will take place on Friday, August 17, with the race on Sunday, August 19. The race will begin at 1PM ET and can be followed live via imsaradio.com or imsa.tv for international viewers, as well as live television coverage at 1PM ET on FS1.
