MONTEREY, Calif. (September 9, 2018) – Following one of the wildest rounds of competition in the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season, Scuderia Corsa and the No. 63 and No. 64 Ferrari would survive a chaotic event to take eighth and ninth-place respectively.
With over 200 guests on hand as the local event for Scuderia Corsa and their sister Ferrari dealerships within the Mattioli Auto Group, hopes were high that the scenic WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca would lead to a repeat victory following their 2017 win at the same event.
Top honors would go to the No. 63 WeatherTech Ferrari 488 GT3 of Cooper MacNeil and Gunnar Jeannette. Avoiding an incident at the start of the race, Cooper would drive a faultless stint, with the team taking an opportune time following a caution to stop, and Jeannette taking over duties for the final two hours. Strong pit strategy would advance the Ferrari as high as the top-three, ultimately finishing eighth as the race settled in at the end.
One spot behind, the No. 64 Ferrari 488 GT3 would enjoy a similar race, fighting throughout the entirety of the race with a number of different competitors, and also avoiding major incident to take ninth.
For Cooper MacNeil, all focus now turns to closing the season at Petit Le Mans.
“The start was crazy,” MacNeil said. “When I came through the last turn, as the green was flying there was all kinds of cars spinning on the front stretch. I was lucky to get through all of the debris without a tire puncture. I was able to get in a rhythm and get the car in the top five when I turned it over to Gunnar. On to Petit Le Mans.”
For Gunnar Jeannette, disappointment with what could have been overshadowed his weekend.
“All in all, it wasn’t a very good day for the WeatherTech Racing team. We will be looking to finish the season on a high-note at Petit next month”
For Townsend Bell, a little misfortune during the mid-race maligned a solid effort.
“It was just unfortunate,” stated Bell. “We had an untimely puncture during my stint which meant we had to go longer on our last set of tires, and with the severe degradation that was a huge penalty. Our Ferrari handled great, and our general pace was reasonably competitive, with a different final stint we could have had a strong finish.”
For Frankie Montecalvo, a mixture of strengths showed promise on the program.
“We had a competitive weekend we just needed a little luck with our strategy,” stated Montecalvo. “My job as the starting driver was to make sure Townsend had a clean car. The start was pretty chaotic, and our strategy was just to conserve the tires and have a car that was great over a long stint. Unfortunately with the length of the early yellows the cars with more aggressive tire management had an advantage, but Townsend did a great job during his stint and overall we had a car that showed a lot of promise.”
For team owner Giacomo Mattioli, a tough race still provided a learning platform to close the year strong.
“There’s no denying this was a tough race,” stated Mattioli. “Both of our cars showed a lot of promise at different points, with strategy advancing our cars throughout the race, just wasn’t our day. As always, the team’s resolve to improve and learn will benefit greatly, and should suit both of our cars well for Petit Le Mans. We’re very committed to closing our IMSA program on a high in 2018, and all focus will be on making the most of the famed 10-hour race.”
The team’s attention will now switch focus to the North American finale of the Ferrari Challenge series, where the team will service nine cars to close a tremendous 2018 season, taking place at the historic Road Atlanta. In one of the most successful seasons to date, driver Cooper MacNeil looks to close with a championship in Trofeo Pirelli, Thomas Tippl hopes to the do the same in Coppa Shell, while Mark Fuller, Chris Carel, Bradley Smith, Jim Camp, Oscar Parades-Arroyo, Lisa Clark, and Rich Papapietro all look to end on a high.
