INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (May 20, 2018) – After one of the most intense qualifying weekends in recent history, Scuderia Corsa and driver Oriol Serviá would land themselves on the ninth row after today’s second day of qualifying for the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500.
During Saturday’s Day One, all attention was on the infamous “bump day” excitement. With 35 cars fighting for 33 spots, the two cars to run the slowest four-lap average by day’s end would be sent home. After surviving the day and guaranteeing their place in the race, all focus would move to Sunday’s qualifying to determine grid position. Serviá and the No. 64 Scuderia Corsa would make a steady run in the afternoon to improve to a 225.699 average, advancing to start on the ninth row in 26th position for the Indianapolis 500 on May 27th.
With the field now set, there will be a full day of practice tomorrow, followed by one final hour during Friday’s infamous ‘carb day,’ leading to Sunday’s headline event.
Driver, Oriol Serviá, on Qualifying
“We just tried to get a good base line today, nothing crazy, to get a solid four laps. I feel we are in a good place to regain confidence from yesterday. Now we just need to focus on the race. We have a good place to go back; Thursday we had a good car in traffic. Obviously we wanted to start more forward than where we are but I have come from the back many times this race. It just makes your life easier when you start from the front. But I guess I am going to have to work a little hard on May 27th but that is what we are here for!”
Scuderia Corsa Team Owner, Giacomo Mattioli, on Indy 500 Qualifying Effort
“I’m proud of the effort of the Scuderia Corsa with RLL team this weekend. Saturday had a tough beginning, but no one gave up, and that attitude is what eventually put us in the field. The team was determined and focused, and obviously Oriol had great save in Turn 1 on Saturday’s qualifying, that earned his salary! It’s great to be guaranteed a spot in our debut Indy 500, and of course running quicker today made the whole effort that much better. Now we can focus on the final two days of practice before the big race, which will be immensely satisfying for everyone in our organization. We are looking for a great show next Sunday!”
