INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (May 27, 2018) – Closing off a remarkable “Month of May” for Scuderia Corsa’s Indianapolis 500 debut, Oriol Serviá and the No. 64 Scuderia Corsa with RLL would drive an amazing race to lead with less than 10 laps remaining. Closing out a month rich with heritage, from a nail-biting qualifying weekend, to participating in the many Indy 500 traditions, the team’s initial foray was largely a success.
Starting the 200-lap, 500-mile race from the ninth row, a combination of raw speed and clever pit strategy would be the key ingredient to the team’s eventful race. Fighting his way from the back half of the field during the early laps, a series of yellow flags nearing the halfway point would prove hugely advantageous for Oriol and the team, using strong pit strategy to advance them among the lead pack, and establishing themselves well within the top-10 for the final 100 laps.
As the race came to a close, the team decided to take a daring pit strategy to advance themselves to the lead. A late-race yellow would prove to be too short for the win.
While the final result will show 17th, the team proved a strong debut, with one caution flag away from a potential Indianapolis 500 victory, leading the field for 16 laps.
Driver, Oriol Serviá, on Indianapolis 500
“I am really proud of the whole effort. When you come as a one-race team, it is really hard to beat the guys that are full season so just doing it for your run for the money like we did is really great. It was great running up front. It showed we had a good speed, great passes, and restarts. We took a risk on the strategy and it almost worked. I am very proud of everyone. Everyone at RLL and Scuderia Corsa were here to win and we showed that we really went for it.”
Scuderia Corsa Team Owner, Giacomo Mattioli, on Indianapolis 500 Debut
“We are happy with our debut at the Indianapolis 500. It was an event-filled 200 laps, but to know that we were so close to victory is a testament to everyone in the organization. Oriol did a great job, saved the fuel, passed people and had great restarts; ultimately, we took a gamble. I want to thank Oriol, Bobby and everyone at Rahal Letterman Lanigan for the great support in this partnership. We’ve truly enjoyed our ‘Month of May’. The Indy 500 is what everyone told me it would be and much more – there’s no event quite like it. From the many traditions, to the incredible fan attendance, and of course a thrilling race, it was great to be a part of it.”
