BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (May 30, 2017)- A previous winner at the venue, and having scored a podium in the last three consecutive races of the IMSA GT-Daytona (GTD) category, Scuderia Corsa and their No. 63 Ferrari 488 GT3 will arrive at this weekend’s Detroit Grand Prix in search of extending their streak. Currently sitting second in the series championship, a strong finish at the notorious 2.36-mile, 14-turn circuit will be crucial in the team’s bid to defend their title, as well as for drivers Christina Nielsen and Alessandro Balzan.
Located on Detroit’s Belle Isle, an island on the Detroit River bordering Canada, the circuit is made entirely of temporary roads around the venue. Featuring extensive bumps lined by unforgiving barriers, the 100-minute race is particularly critical for the championship due to the higher likelihood of incidents.
In addition to their current podium streak, Scuderia Corsa has had previous success at the event itself. Last year, the team took a podium finish, as well as taking a class victory in 2014.
Beyond the championship focus, the event will kick off a historic month of June. Immediately following the race, the team will take part in official testing for the upcoming 24 Hours of LeMans in France, followed by competing at the famed endurance race two weeks later. Immediately after that, the team will head back to their primary focus of IMSA competition at the Six Hours of the Glen in Watkins Glen, New York.
For Christina Nielsen, the championship focus is critical.
“Detroit has always been good to me in terms of podiums,” stated Nielsen. “It will be interesting to see if this track has gotten more bumpy, it definitely had more in 2016, and I’m a little nervous about that because it was definitely sketchy. It’s a street circuit, concrete walls, so there’s no room for mistakes. Qualifying, just like Long Beach, is always important, but we’re not even halfway through the season so points for the championship will be the most important thing. This will kick off the first of six weeks straight on the road, I’m looking forward to it.”
“The race at Detroit is unlike any other,” stated Balzan. “It’s pretty fast for a street circuit, but with all of the bumps and walls you have to be extremely careful. The Ferrari 488 GT3 has proven to be a phenomenal all-around car, and that should show well for us there. The team has proven their strength repeatedly over the last several races, and Christina has been a fantastic teammate, so I’m confident we can show well.”
For team owner Giacomo Mattioli, hopes are high for valuable championship points.
“Detroit is always a very important race for the championship,” stated Mattioli. “With the IMSA championship being so tight, it’s crucial we make zero mistakes, and the planning and preparation in a to a month like this becomes critical. June is always a fantastic month for us, and we look forward to beginning it in the right way.”
As a two-day event, the Detroit Grand Prix will begin with practice and qualifying on Friday, June 2, with the race taking place the next day on Saturday, June 3. Live television coverage will be available on FOX Sports 2 at 12:30PM ET.
