January 31, 2016 (Daytona Beach, Fla.)—As the 24 Hours of Daytona marched on, both the no. 68 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 GTE and the no. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia took turns at the front of their respective classes throughout the night.
The world’s debut of the Ferrari 488 GTE continued with strong performances: Alexandre Premat was able to move the No. 68 back to the lead lap in the 11th hour when Pier Guidi took over and assumed the GTLM lead just before the 12-hour NAEC mark. Daniel Serra and Memo Rojas followed with strong double stints of their own through the morning hours and, as the sun rose, Premat moved the Ferrari 488 GTE to fourth position at the third segment of the NAEC. After the 18-hour results, No. 68 Ferrari 488 GTE is currently in third position in the North American Endurance Cup.
“I had a very late stint, and I was done at about 6:00 AM,” said Rojas. “I am really happy with the Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 GTE. I am very surprised that with our brand new car we have had zero issues with the car. We are running our pace and being careful to protect the car in traffic by not taking any risks. I think we are going to have a good run until the end of this race.”
The no. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia remained a contender in the GT-Daytona class throughout the night. Jeff Segal advanced the Ferrari as high as second place, before handing the car over to Alessandro Balzan whom remained in second position, battling for the lead throughout his stint.
Renauer ran in the top-five throughout the morning hours, keeping the Ferrari 458 Italia on the lead lap even as the team made repairs after contact earlier in the race. He handed the no. 63 over to Nielsen who drove into the 18th hour in 8th position enabling the team to hold third place in the North American Endurance Cup.
“The Ferrari 458 feels really nice, well balanced and drivable which is exactly what you want for a 24-hour race,” said Segal. “Our strategy was never to go sprinting towards the front, though. We are being careful and consistent, and we are sticking to our plan. And we will see how it works out by the afternoon!”
As we are finishing Rolex 24’s 19th hour, Alessandro Pier Guidi had the no. 68 488 GTE in fourth position in GT-LeMans while the no. 63 458 Italia was being driven by Alessandro Balzan in ninth position in GT-Daytona.
