Top-Five in ‘Fast Friday’ Practice Sets Momentum for Indianapolis Qualifying
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (May 18, 2018) – Following four days of practice for next weekend’s 102nd Running of the Indianapolis 500, Scuderia Corsa with RLL and driver Oriol Serviá would end the week on a strong note, taking fourth in today’s ‘Fast Friday’ session, and with a strong draw for tomorrow’s first day of qualifying.
Working on both race and qualifying setup throughout the four days of practice, the progress of the No. 64 Scuderia Corsa was steady, ending each day within the top-20, and today’s session proving the strongest. Running an average speed of 230.247 mph to end the week, Serviá and the team would run fourth fastest, setting the team well for tomorrow’s first-day of qualifying.
As a two-day event, qualifications for the Indianapolis 500 are unlike any other event in the world. With 35 cars vying for only 33 spots, tomorrow’s first day of qualifying is officially known as “bump day,” where all drivers and teams have the day to set their best four-lap average. While entrants will have as many as three attempts to make a qualifying run, at 6PM ET the opportunity will be cut off, with the two slowest cars being removed from the event.
With the 33 cars set, Sunday’s second day of qualifying will decide the individual grid positions for each team. Each team will get one attempt to set a four-lap average to decide their final grid position for the race, with the top-nine from Saturday’s session being put in to their own ‘fast nine’ session on Sunday, determining the pole position for next weekend’s Indianapolis 500.
For Scuderia Corsa and all other teams, tomorrow’s qualifying will be critical to ensure they make the race, with a secondary focus on qualifying for Sunday’s ‘fast nine.’
Driver Oriol Servià on the First Week of Practice
“Fast Friday has come and gone. The day goes quicker than you want. We still had a couple things to try for tomorrow’s qualifying but I am pretty pleased. We finished fourth fastest with a little bit of tow on that lap. So right now, I think if we make everything right, tomorrow we may have a shot at Top 9. But again we have to get everything perfect in the four laps. If not, we may be just missing that line. We still have a lot of data to look at overnight and try to make a good guess for tomorrow. The weather should be good enough for at least letting everyone try a couple attempts. So hopefully we get everything right and make that top 9 for qualifying!”
