September 13, 2016 (Los Angeles, Calif.) – Scuderia Corsa’s quest for a second-straight GT-Daytona championship swung in the right direction follow the previous IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race at Virginia International Raceway. Christina Nielsen and Alessandro Balzan are set to contend the final two races of the season, starting with this weekend’s race at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas.
Designed as a track for the Formula 1 World Championship, CoTA is the most modern racing facility on the IMSA calendar as well as one of the most challenging with a combination of low-speed corners, high-speed corners, long straightaways and heavy braking zones. With a 20-point lead in the GT-Daytona championship, Nielsen and Balzan will need to extract the maximum out of the no. 63 Ferrari 488 GT3 to maintain their advantage.
“I’m very much looking forward to Circuit of The Americas,” said Nielsen. “I think every type of car competing at CoTA could have their strongest sides shown, but also their weakest sides shown, so it should be very interesting to see how it pans out. We may struggle with the straight line but we will fight for every bit that we can. I’ve read that Balzan is pretty quick at CoTA – I haven’t seen him yet, but I’m going to let him work his magic!’
“I think we will be in good shape this weekend,” said Balzan. “I love the Circuit of The Americas; it is a challenging track where the Ferrari 488 GT3 should excel, particularly through the fast esses. It’s a great weekend to be a part of, especially with the WEC there as well, and we will be pushing hard to defend the championship.”
While Nielsen and Balzan lead the GT-Daytona championship, Martin Fuentes leads the Pirelli World Challenge GT-A championship in the no. 07 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia. This weekend, the PWC will contest a pair of races at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California. With nine victories on the season, including the last race at Utah Motorsports Campus, Fuentes has built up a 272-point lead in the championship with three races remaining in the season, and can secure the championship by finishing in seventh position and completing 50% of the race’s distance in Saturday’s race.
“We are really looking forward to this weekend’s race in Sonoma,” said Fuentes. “I’m ready, and the team is ready, and we know that mathematically we can clinch the championship on Saturday. We had a very good race last year in Sonoma. The Ferrari behaves well on this kind of track, and I am excited to be back in the car after a month away. I hope we can win the championship for Scuderia Corsa this weekend!”
The Lone Star Le Mans will be broadcast live on FOX Sports on Saturday, September 17 at 12:30 PM ET with qualifying streamed live on IMSA.tv on Friday, September 16 at 4:45 PM ET.
The first PWC race of the weekend will be streamed live on Saturday, September 17 at 4:45 PM ET with the second on Sunday, September 18 at 4:15 PM ET on world-challenge.com.
