September 19, 2015 (Austin, Tex.) – Despite a challenging day under the relentless Texas sun at the Lone Star LeMans, Scuderia Corsa and drivers Bill Sweedler and Townsend Bell inched closer to the lead of the GT-Daytona championship.
The no. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia was qualified by Bill Sweedler in a strong third position for Saturday’s race. Much as he did at the previous TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race at Virginia International Raceway, Sweedler drove the Ferrari to the lead of the field during his stint. Townsend Bell took the car over during the first pit stop, and as other teams employed alternate strategies to move up the standings, Bell challenged for the lead using the speed and balance of the Ferrari 458 Italia.
In the middle of mixed-class traffic, Bell had contact with a Prototype class car and forced to serve a drive-through penalty. After the serving the penalty, Bell moved up several positions to finish the race in sixth position. Sixth position still allowed the team to close the gap in the GT-Daytona championship, with Scuderia Corsa now four points behind the championship lead.
“It’s a shame how the race turned out, because the Ferrari was so good today and the team was doing an exceptional job in the pits,” said Sweedler. “When the car and team is this good, it makes it really fun for the drivers. But there’s a lot of racing left and you can count on a big, big fight for the GT-Daytona championship at Petit LeMans. I know our guys will give us every chance to bring that championship home.”
Bell, despite the disappointment of the penalty, was happy to close the championship deficit and is looking ahead to the final race at Petit Le Mans.
“I hate letting the team down, because they gave Bill and I everything we needed to win today,” said Bell. “It’s a really tough break, and I have no one to blame but myself – I just made a mistake. Luckily, we were still able to close the gap in the championship, which is great because winning the championship has been our goal this year. I will put this behind us, and we are focused on Petit LeMans.”
Team owner Giacomo Mattioli echoed Bell’s thoughts:
“in the last two races the team has raised the level of performance, We are enjoying great teamwork and chemistry at Scuderia Corsa,” said Mattioli. “We closed the gap to the championship leader, which is the most important thing, and we are looking forward to the final race of the year at Petit Le Mans where we will battle to the final lap.’
The final race of the season will be the ten-hour/1000-mile Petit Le Mans, on October 3 at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia. It also marks the final round of the Patron North American Endurance Cup, in which Scuderia Corsa is in second position in the GT-Daytona class.
