ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (March 10, 2019) – The No. 20 Ed Carpenter Racing Scuderia Corsa Chevrolet relinquished six-position progress after race-ending contact on lap 25 of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Driver Ed Jones walks away with minor injury.
Jones made contact with the wall in Turn 9 when attempting to overtake the No. 5 of James Hinchcliffe for eighth after working his way up to ninth from his 15th place starting position. Jones sustained a figure fracture from the force of the hit.
As Scuderia Corsa dissects the weekend as a whole it takes pride in the positive progress made with the No. 20 sponsored by Flex-Box. Before retirement Jones ran as high as eighth, proving his pace was best suited for the front of the NTT IndyCar Field. At the start of the race, he showed tremendous skill passing three cars in one lap, something the streets of St. Petersburg rarely allow
“I’m fine, I think I might have broken my finger, but other than that I’m fine,” Jones said. “It was a frustrating weekend. We had the pace to be out front in qualifying after finishing the morning practice sixth. The guys gave me a great race car today. We had to take risks to get forward quickly; we had gone 15th to ninth then. I was just about to get a run on Hinchcliffe, and unfortunately, I clipped the inside wall in Turn 9 and that was it. I’m sorry for the team. They did great work, and we were chasing after it all weekend. They deserve a better result. We’ll be pushing for Austin.
The next NTT IndyCar race takes place March 24 for the IndyCar Classic at the prestigious Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Practice takes place March 22 with one final practice and qualifying happening on March 23. The green flag drops Sunday, March 24 at 1 p.m. ET. The IndyCar Classic is broadcast on NBCSN.
