Race Season Kick-Off At Daytona
Scuderia Corsa brought back its iconic speed and monochrome WeatherTech livery on the No. 63 WeatherTech Ferrari at Daytona International Speedway for the Roar Before the 24.
The test weekend is the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship series debut for the 2020 race season. It provides race teams and drivers with the opportunity to set up their respective race cars before racing in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. The legendary event brings together drivers from around the world, all in hopes of taking home a Daytona Rolex. Scuderia Corsa added drivers Cooper MacNeil, Toni Vilander, Jeff Westphal and Alessandro Balzan to the mix.
The Rolex also allows teams to flex some muscle in a qualifying session that sets the paddock organization for the Rolex weekend. Top teams take home more ideal garage spaces. This weekend Scuderia Corsa nominated Westphal to get the job done. Westphal landed the No. 63 Ferrari 488 EVO fifth thanks to a hot lap he posted with two minutes remaining. The exact garage earned by a fifth-place qualifying position IMSA releases Scuderia Corsa at a later date.
For Team Owner Giacomo Mattioli the weekend placed the team in good position ahead of the Rolex 24.
“We accomplished many goals this weekend in preparation for the Rolex,” Mattioli said. “It is always important for the drivers to have the setup of the car to where they feel comfortable. When we return for the race, if the car is executing the corners, how the drivers like they can begin to push and finalize the more minor details. We were strong in the race last year, and I believe we will pick up where we left off.”
New to 2020, IMSA offers fans an all-access pass from home for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The Track Pass offered by NBC Gold gives viewers in the United States a chance to watch every IMSA events on live stream for $20 dollars a year. Another exciting feature offered to those watching the Rolex 24 At Daytona from home – the opening and final laps of the endurance race are to be aired live on NBC.
The Rolex 24 takes place Wednesday, Jan. 22 through Sunday, Jan. 26 at Daytona International Speedway. The weekend kicks off with heavy schedule as official practice begins at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET, followed by qualifying at 4:15 p.m. A single practice gives teams time for a last-minute adjustment Friday, Jan. 24 at 9:55 a.m. The Rolex 24 At Daytona begins at 1:35 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, and ends at 1:35 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26.
